MSK Clinic

Shockwave is a cutting edge and highly effective treatment, which we are proud to offer across multiple clinics.

Shockwave Therapy Available in Blackpool, Lytham, St Annes, Fleetwood, Kirkham and Preston

Shockwave can be used to recover from numerous injuries; achilles, hamstring, rotator cuff, tennis elbow to name but a few. Shockwave has been used in elite sport for many years, but is only now becoming more widely available to the general public, and recreational athletes.

So shockwave, despite the name, is not a therapy that delivers an electric shock. It works by delivering a shockwave of pressure, similar to a Thera-gun, but higher intensity.

This is not another fad or gimmick treatment, it is used widely in the NHS in settings where the budget allows, and has been used in sport for 20+ years, first being approved by the FDA in the year 2000 for plantar fasciitis.

The Evidence

There is strong evidence for a large number of conditions. We will spare you the details, but give you the references should you wish to know more! We’ve broken it down into evidence for general conditions, and also specific conditions.

What does the treatment Involve?

Patients tend to say that after 3 sessions they see notable improvement in their function and pain.

And it’s always nice to know that the complications are more or less non existent…

While it is a painful treatment, there are no recorded complications that limit the healing process or that cause lasting injury.

What patients say about Shockwave

“Mark explained the process of Shockwave Therapy, the potential benefits and the timeframe for recovery. The therapy has been very beneficial, coupled with physiotherapy treatment by way of strengthening exercises.” – Andrew

“I came to The Bob Ward Physiotherapy Clinic a few months ago after being diagnosed with tennis elbow. Mark performed a few test to confirm and we started treatment straight away. After a couple of sessions, we discussed the possibility of Shockwave therapy, as the expected results would see a faster return to pain free motion. Once Mark evaluated the suitability of shockwave, we started treatment and wow! Almost instantly I started to regain strength and movement in my arm, and I am pleased to say after just a few more sessions, the tennis elbow pain is completely gone and my arm is back to 100%. Mark has also made sure I have a clear recovery plan, advised what exercise I must continue to do showing genuine care and empathy. Well done to Mark at The Bob Ward Physiotherapy Clnic, I’m over the moon with the results of a truly great team.”

Benefits of Physiotherapy

There is strong evidence for a large number of conditions. We will spare you the details, but give you the references should you wish to know more! We’ve broken it down into evidence for general conditions, and also specific conditions.

Shockwave Therapy is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment used to help stubborn tendon, muscle and joint problems that haven’t responded to rest or conventional physiotherapy. At The Bob Ward Physiotherapy Clinic in Blackpool, we use focused acoustic waves to stimulate your body’s natural healing response, improve blood flow and encourage damaged tissue to repair itself.

It’s particularly effective for conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, calcific shoulder pain and chronic tendon injuries. As part of our musculoskeletal (MSK) clinic, Shockwave Therapy is often combined with expert physiotherapy and rehabilitation to achieve the best long-term results.

Most patients describe Shockwave Therapy as uncomfortable rather than painful. The level of discomfort depends on the area being treated and how irritated the tissue is.

As an experienced physiotherapist, I always adjust the treatment to your comfort level. Most patients find the discomfort settles within minutes, and many notice their pain reducing as the course of treatment progresses. The sessions are short, and the potential benefits usually far outweigh the temporary discomfort.

Shockwave Therapy delivers controlled acoustic energy into injured tissue. This stimulates circulation, encourages new blood vessel formation, helps break down abnormal scar tissue and calcification, and activates your body’s natural healing processes.

Rather than simply masking pain, Shockwave Therapy aims to treat the underlying cause of chronic tendon and soft tissue injuries. When combined with the correct rehabilitation programme, it can significantly improve recovery and reduce the need for more invasive treatments.

Most people feel completely normal after treatment and can return to their usual daily activities straight away. Occasionally, some patients report mild soreness or fatigue in the treated area for 24-48 hours as the body’s healing response begins.

This is a normal part of the recovery process and usually settles quickly. We’ll explain exactly what to expect before your treatment and provide advice on getting the best possible outcome.

Shockwave Therapy is available at our Blackpool clinic as part of your physiotherapy treatment plan. The exact cost depends on whether it’s a standalone treatment or combined with a full musculoskeletal assessment and rehabilitation programme.

We’ll always discuss the most appropriate treatment plan during your initial assessment, with clear pricing and no hidden costs. Members of our VIP Healthcare Membership also receive 20% discount on eligible treatments.

When used for the right condition and alongside an appropriate rehabilitation programme, Shockwave Therapy has an excellent success rate. Clinical research and our own experience show particularly good outcomes for long-standing tendon conditions and plantar fasciitis.

Success depends on making the correct diagnosis first. That’s why every patient at our MSK clinic receives a comprehensive assessment to identify the true source of their pain before treatment begins. Treating the correct problem is just as important as choosing the right treatment.

Most patients with plantar fasciitis benefit from three to six Shockwave Therapy sessions, usually spaced around one week apart. The exact number depends on how long you’ve had your symptoms, the severity of the condition and how your body responds to treatment.

Shockwave Therapy works best when combined with stretching, strengthening exercises, footwear advice and correcting any underlying biomechanical issues. This gives you the greatest chance of long-term pain relief rather than simply masking the symptoms.

Shockwave Therapy offers an effective, drug-free and non-surgical option for treating persistent musculoskeletal pain. Benefits can include:

  • Reduced pain and inflammation
  • Faster tissue healing
  • Improved mobility and function
  • Increased blood flow to injured tissue
  • Reduced scar tissue and calcification
  • Quicker return to work, sport and everyday activities
  • Reduced need for injections or surgery

At The Bob Ward Physiotherapy Clinic in Blackpool, Shockwave Therapy is never used in isolation. Every treatment is supported by a personalised rehabilitation programme designed to help you recover fully and keep your symptoms from returning.
